Examination

The certification examination is comprehensive, and consists of separate multiple choice and essay sections administered sequentially on the same day. The two sections are graded independently, and passing grades are required on both sections. The essay section presents five or more clinical scenarios, each accompanied by a series of questions. Candidates are required to select and respond to any three of the offered scenario/question sets. There is no oral examination.

The examination is not designed to test a candidate's "book" knowledge, for that knowledge is presumed. The examination is designed to elicit the candidate's ability to use that knowledge, to apply it in the physical examination, diagnosis and treatment of problems typically encountered in a diverse podiatric practice. Examinations are given twice yearly, in May and October, in Livonia, Michigan.
